At Ad Astra Dog Boarding Kennels we provide everything your dog will need during their stay. We have a good stock of toys and treats, which are given to every dog, but you are welcome to bring their favourite treats, bedding and toys that may help them settle in.
For bedding we use vet bed and high backed plastic beds. Vet bed is an expensive thick fleecy blanket material, but it is the best bedding available for the job – warm and comfortable for the dogs and easily washed and dried for us. We add a disinfectant during the vet bed wash cycle to ensure that no virus, bacteria or parasite survives. Similarly, plastic beds are scrubbed with a disinfectant cleaner between use by different dogs.
Our refurbished dog boarding kennels are designed to the highest standards, they are airy and spacious with under-tile heated floors for comfort and additional electric heating for the colder days. The tiled floor, coated walls and plastic run dividers are used for ease of cleaning and disinfection, which is of course done every day. The largest of our newer kennels provides shared accommodation for up to four dogs.
We keep a stock of most major brands of tinned and complete dog foods available in supermarkets along with frozen beef, tripe and chicken to allow us to feed your dog on familiar food. Veterinary prescribed or other special diets can be catered for, but we request that you bring these with you. All dogs are fed at breakfast and tea time, though this can be increased when required for puppies, dietary problems, etc. Fresh water is always available and is changed during every walk.
Should your dog be on veterinary prescribed medication we will administer this as required at no additional cost. We have cared for diabetics, broken bones, cuts, sores, etc. with our own dogs as well as guests.
Our two large and one small exercise paddocks are fully enclosed by a secure 2 metre high fence (not chain link) topped with inward facing wire to further increase the height, and concrete slabs around the base to prevent digging underneath the fence. This allows dogs in our care to be safely exercised – which we regard as essential to their general health and well being. This ranges from strenuous chasing around after a ball or other toys to a gentle meander and sniff around for some of our older guests.
All dogs are exercised for around 15 minutes three times each day – morning, afternoon and evening – unless the weather is extremely wet, when they miss the afternoon walk.
Our exercise paddocks are floodlit – so we are still able to provide evening exercise during the short winter days.
